Optimizing Discovery in the Big Data Era

The Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC) supports and reinforces multidisciplinary and data-intensive research through creative and innovative use of ICT in all its manifestations. To stimulate this enhanced Science (eScience) NLeSC works as a network organization focused on collaboration, with the aim to change scientific practice by making large-scale data analysis possible across multiple disciplines.

It is the goal of NLeSC to:

  • Stimulate creative data-driven research across all scientific disciplines
  • Develop and apply tools to enable data-intensive scientific research
  • Promote knowledge-based collaboration between cross-disciplinary researchers.

A list of current eScience projects can be found here.

An introduction to the key people can be found here.

NLeSC works with closely with academic and NWO institutes, such as CWI, with SURF and SURFnet, with external parties like NBIC, with SARA and projects (Big Grid) and commercial technology providers.

By SURF and NWO

The eScience Center is a unique joint initiative by SURF and NWO and was set up in response to a decision by the Dutch Government. SURF and NWO are combining their expertise to create an effective bridge between research and ICT.

Scientific areas currently prioritized by NLeSC:

  • Chemistry & Materials
  • Life Sciences
  • eScience Methodology
  • Humanities & Social Sciences
  • Sustainability & Environment

Chairmen Amandus Lundqvist (SURF) and Jos Engelen (NWO) introduce the concept of enhanced Science (eScience):

“When they hear the term ‘eScience’, a lot of people immediately think of ‘electronic’ in the service of ‘science’, but the ‘e’ in fact stands for ‘enhanced’, for enhancement and innovation in science. The Center aims to enhance scientific and scholarly endeavor, for example by deploying advanced ‘Big Data’ analysis tools and ICT methods from other scientific disciplines for research purposes. It will also help researchers use the various tools in an innovative and creative manner. So eScience also encourages interdisciplinarity, making it logical for SURF and NWO to tackle this venture together.”
